Why battery storage

Make every unit count

Solar panels often produce more electricity during the middle of the day than a household is actually using at the time. Without storage, that surplus generation is usually exported to the grid.

Solar battery storage lets you retain more of that electricity instead. Stored energy can then help cover evening household consumption, when panels are no longer generating and grid electricity tends to cost more.

Suitable systems can also charge during cheaper off-peak tariff periods, and smart optimisation can potentially add further value on top. Actual results depend on your usage, tariff and system design.

In practice

What a home battery changes

  • More self-consumption
Daytime generation you would otherwise export is kept for your own use.
  • Evening cover
Stored electricity can supply lighting, cooking and appliances after dark.
  • Off-peak charging
Where supported, the battery charges when grid electricity is cheapest.
  • Tariff flexibility
Storage makes smart time-of-use tariffs far more practical to use.
  • Works with existing solar
Retrofit battery storage is possible on many existing installations.
The difference

What changes when you add battery storage?

Solar generation is most valuable when you can use more of it yourself.

Without battery

Surplus goes to the grid

Energy flow

  • Solar panels
  • Home
  • Excess exported
  • Grid electricity later
  • Lower solar self-consumption
  • More evening grid usage
  • Surplus electricity exported
  • Less flexibility around energy tariffs
With battery

Surplus stays in your home

Energy flow

  • Solar panels
  • Home
  • Battery
  • Evening usage

Optional, with a smart tariff

  • Cheap overnight electricity
  • Battery
  • Peak-time usage
  • Store more of your solar generation
  • Use stored electricity in the evening
  • Reduce reliance on peak-rate grid electricity
  • Greater flexibility with smart tariffs

Smart energy technology

Make your battery work harder

Compatible smart battery storage systems can potentially respond to tariff and energy-market conditions, charging and discharging intelligently rather than following a fixed schedule.

Simtricity Flux is an optional layer on top of a suitable battery system. Where a system supports it, the battery can shift more of its charging into cheaper periods and hold energy back for more expensive ones. It is an advanced optional benefit rather than something every battery automatically delivers, and results vary by system, tariff and usage.

What battery storage gives you

🌙

Evening Power

Use stored solar generation through the evening instead of buying more electricity from the grid at peak rates.

🛡️

Backup Power

Backup capability available on suitable system configurations, keeping selected circuits live during a grid outage.

📱

Smart Tariffs

Pair with a smart time-of-use tariff so the battery charges during cheaper off-peak windows and supplies your home at peak times.

🔧

Retrofit Friendly

Battery storage can often be added to an existing solar system — we assess compatibility and design around what you already have.

Reviews

What our battery customers say

Feedback from homeowners who chose battery storage and solar-and-battery systems.

★★★★★

Tom and the team fitted our solar and battery system in two days. Tidy work, everything explained clearly, and our evening grid usage has dropped to almost nothing.

Sarah H. — Bristol
★★★★★

Added a battery and Simtricity Flux to our existing panels. It's now earning while we sleep — wish we'd done it sooner.

Priya K. — Portishead
★★★★★

Great communication from quote to commissioning, no hidden extras, and they left the loft cleaner than they found it.

FAQ

Battery storage questions, answered

What size home battery do I need?

Battery sizing depends on your electricity consumption, how much solar you generate, the tariff you are on and how you want to use stored energy. A larger battery stores more, but the right size is the one matched to your usage pattern — we confirm this at survey.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

In many cases yes. Battery storage can often be retrofitted to an existing solar PV system, subject to inverter compatibility, available space and a property survey. Where the existing inverter is not compatible, an AC-coupled battery is usually an option.

Can I install a battery without solar panels?

Yes. A battery can also charge from the grid, which means it can be used alongside a suitable smart or time-of-use tariff to store cheaper off-peak electricity for use later in the day.

Can batteries charge from the grid?

Where the system and tariff support it, yes. Off-peak charging lets the battery fill up during cheaper overnight periods and discharge during more expensive peak periods.

Can a battery provide backup power during an outage?

Backup capability depends on system design and equipment configuration. Some batteries and hybrid inverters support backup circuits, others do not. If backup matters to you, tell us at survey and we will design for it where suitable.

How long do home batteries last?

Home batteries are typically supplied with a manufacturer warranty covering a set number of years or charge cycles, along with a stated end-of-warranty capacity. Real-world life depends on how the battery is used, cycled and maintained.

What is a smart electricity tariff?

A smart or time-of-use tariff charges different rates at different times of day, with cheaper periods usually overnight. A battery can charge during those cheaper windows and supply your home when rates are higher.

What is Simtricity Flux?

Simtricity Flux is a smart-energy optimisation service for compatible battery systems. It can respond automatically to tariff and energy-market conditions to decide when to charge and discharge. Performance varies and no particular saving or return is guaranteed.
