What drives the cost of
a solar & battery install?

Indicative UK price ranges for each part of a typical installation. These are guides, not quotes — every property is different.

Cost breakdown

Where the money goes

A solar installation is really a bundle of separate jobs stitched together: panels, inverter, wiring, safety devices, sometimes a battery, sometimes roof or consumer unit work. Below is a rough guide to what each part typically costs.

Solar Panels

£180 – £320 per panel

Supplied and fitted. Panels are usually only around a third of the total installed cost — the rest is inverter, mounting, wiring, labour and scaffolding.

Inverters

£700 – £4,000+ installed

String inverters for smaller systems start around £700–£1,100; hybrid inverters for battery-ready setups typically run £1,500–£2,500. Larger three-phase units can exceed £4,000.

Battery Storage

£2,500 – £8,000+

Priced by capacity (kWh). A 5kWh battery starts around £2,500–£4,000; mid-sized 8–10kWh units are £4,000–£6,500; larger 13kWh+ systems from £8,000.

DC Cabling, Strings & Isolators

£350 – £550

Covers all the cabling, connectors and isolator switches needed between the panels and inverter. Individual isolators are roughly £50–£100 each.

Consumer Unit & Surge Protection

£450 – £1,200

Many older homes need a fuseboard upgrade before a solar or battery system can be safely connected. An SPD adds roughly £80–£150 when fitted as part of the upgrade.

Roof Work & Scaffolding

£300 – £900+

Scaffolding is usually quoted separately. Structural repairs to a single roof section typically cost £250–£500 if needed — most roofs need no extra work.

Labour & Certification

£1,500 – £2,400

Covers electrical connection, testing, MCS certification and DNO paperwork. Usually already reflected in the installed prices above.

A note on VAT

  • Qualifying solar panel and battery storage installations in the UK currently benefit from 0% VAT.
  • VAT rules on energy-saving materials can change, so confirm the current position with your installer rather than assuming it applies automatically.

Putting it together

Because every home is different, total system costs vary a great deal. A modest system with no roof or fuseboard work will land at the lower end of these ranges, while a larger system with a battery, upgraded consumer unit and scaffolding will land considerably higher.

As a very rough steer, small residential systems tend to start in the region of a few thousand pounds, with larger systems including battery storage commonly running into the low-to-mid five figures.

The only reliable way to know your own number is a proper site survey and an itemised quote — but hopefully this gives you a clearer sense of what is behind it.
